MORE Seeks Executive Director

Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts (MORE), is seeking candidates for an exempt, salaried, full-time position as MORE’s Executive Director (ED). Key responsibilities of the ED are management of MoCo Epic (approximately 1,200 riders), increasing MORE’s financial capacity through fundraising via donations, grant writing, bolstering membership growth, assisting with event planning and execution, and cultivating volunteer leadership. Other goals for the position include assisting in overall club administration, coordinating local advocacy, marketing and communications, and cultivating public land management agency partnerships. MORE is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission of “Riding Bikes and Building Trails” in the greater DC region. MORE is an IMBA chapter with approx. 2000 members and maintains 850+ miles of trails in 60+ parks with the help of 90+ trail liaisons. MORE has a working volunteer board of 9 members responsible for membership, activities, advocacy, trailwork, communications and treasury functions. The MORE BOD fully engages in function and tasks to support the ED duties and responsibilities. The ED is expected to work with the BoD’s and other teams and committees to complete tasks.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

It is anticipated that the ED will spend 40% of his/her time on MoCo Epic, 25% on Development/Fundraising/Events , 25% administrative and 10% advocacy.

The MoCo Epic is an annual supported trail riding event held in October with 1200 paid participants, 9 aid stations and distance options of 15-75 miles. Registration and Family Day Activities occur on Saturday with the main rides and after-party on Sunday. Approximately 200 volunteers support the event each year, including a core experienced volunteer team of 8-10 that handle critical individual jobs. Event Manager duties and responsibilities include:

  • Prioritize, plan, budget, advertise, and execute the MoCo
  • Manage the team of experienced volunteers who handle various event elements, create and administer a calendar of actions leading up the event, assure volunteers are staying on track or assist where needed
  • Apply for and obtain all required permits.
  • Manage registration website (BikeReg), promotional communications on multimedia, and sponsor/ vendor coordination. Create compelling marketing materials
  • Manage event revenue and expense budget
  • Create, manage, and use the event to market and promote MORE's work and awareness of our advocacy initiatives
  • Grow membership development by promoting MORE’s relevance to riders, bicycle industry, corporate and other supporters
  • Renew or recruit aid station and ride sponsors, communicate expectations for aid station nutrition, etc.
  • Manage event logistics, including aid station and event site
  • Create event templates for replicating success
  • Coordinate MORE Board member participation at events
  • Assist or coordinate tents and equipment at the event site, food and beverages, and many other administrative functions as assigned 

Development/Fundraising/Events responsibilities include cultivating donors, fundraising campaigns,  securing business memberships and organizational sponsors, providing support at Club Events. Tasks will include:

  • Developing a fundraising strategy with goals and measurable
  • Recruiting members, managing and retaining existing business sponsorships
  • Developing and implementing strategies to grow individual memberships
  • Building relationships and securing donations from individual donors and sponsors
  • Developing and coordinating fundraising campaigns and events
  • Engaging, guiding, and supporting MORE board members in fundraising efforts
  • Supporting MORE’s board members and liaisons on grant proposals
  • Coordinating with IMBA’s membership services team on membership drives and membership retention
  • Support and coordinate with Activities Director and other Board Members club activities, including pop-up events, seasonal events, annual meeting, etc.
  • Provide on-site support during events as needed to enhance club presence
  • Support partner events in coordination with MORE Board Members
  • Manage physical assets such as event banners, tents, apparel, event supplies, etc. 
Administrative duties and responsibilities include:
  • General non-profit administration
  • Facilitating board committee tasks, attending and providing updates at each monthly board meeting (required)
  • Handling MORE assets and ensuring that there are adequate policies, procedures, and protections in place (insurance, fiscal policies, and legal compliance)
  • Monitoring and responding to email and social media communications
  • Monitoring and updating MORE’s social media accounts with relevant information/posts
  • Assist with maintenance of club website
  • Assisting with Event communications and online signups
  • Assisting with member communications and membership support activities
  • Assisting land managers communications
  • Attending meetings during the day when volunteers are not available
  • Applying for grants
  • Responding to grant requirements
  • Monitoring and disseminating US Mail for MORE, check PO Box
  • Monitoring MORE calendar and working with board and volunteers to post

 Advocacy duties and responsibilities recognize that MORE “trail liaisons” lead advocacy efforts at their local parks and are supported by advocacy and trailboss directors. The ED’s duties include:

  • Support volunteer liaisons and board members for daytime meetings when they cannot attend
  • Identify opportunities for access to public land and for trails that do not currently have trail liaisons
  • Help build relationships with local government agencies, local business, other non-profits and cycling industry
 DESIRED REQUIREMENTS
  • Passion for and interest in outdoor recreation, such as mountain biking, sustainability and conservation
  • Track record of managing or working on large events, preferably involving recreation
  • Track record of raising funds from individuals, businesses, foundations, and corporate sponsors
  • Experience serving on or working with a non-profit board of directors as either an Executive Director or staff member
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with volunteer leadership development
  • Integrity, positive attitude and outstanding leadership and teamwork capabilities
  • Excellent organizational and management skills including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation
  • Savvy with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,), database products (CiviCRM), mass mail clients (MailChimp, Constant Contact)
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  • Proficient in Office 365 and basic graphic design software (g. Canva).
  • An entrepreneurial spirit
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends
